On October 2nd, from 14:00 to 17:30 CET, UCLL Campus Diepenbeek will host an exciting workshop dedicated to advancing citizen science. This event will feature distinguished representatives from the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA), Scivil, and leading universities and applied sciences institutions across Flanders.
The workshop will begin with an introductory address by Sara Gilissen, followed by a keynote presentation from Simona Cerrato of ECSA. Cerrato will discuss strategies to expand participation in citizen science, emphasizing the vital role of educators in fostering a research-oriented mindset among students and the benefits of small group interactions. She will also highlight the importance of networking and qualitative impact measures in citizen science initiatives. Next, Annelies Duerinckx from Scivil will offer insights into the state of citizen science in Flanders, focusing on the challenges and innovative approaches to engage traditionally hard-to-reach groups, such as entrepreneurs. Duerinckx will underscore the necessity of diversifying funding sources and inspiring citizen participation beyond data collection. Käthe Robert from Universiteit Antwerpen will present the "Teek-a-break" project, comparing citizen science projects driven by media attention to those where researchers act as communicators. Her presentation will highlight the significance of effective communication in enhancing citizen engagement.
After a brief intermission, Karel Moons of UCLL will introduce the "Learning Bubbles" project, discussing the unique experience of being a research subject in an educational context. Saskia De Bruyn, from UCLL, will address the topic of Inclusive Participatory Research. Raquel Barreira from Polytechnic University of Setúbal (IPS) will conclude the presentations with a focus on the E³UDRES² initiative and the establishment of a new Bank of Researchers aimed at fostering greater participation in research activities. This will set the stage for an engaging panel discussion moderated by Sara Gilissen, featuring the day's speakers and addressing questions from the host and live queries from the virtual audience.

On June 7, 2024, the E³UDRES² Ent-r-e-novators project held a hybrid international workshop entitled “Open Science and Open Education”. The event, held at the Polytechnic University of Setúbal (IPS), was attended by several project partners, members of other international alliances and other guests. This conference reinforced the project's commitment to promoting innovation and collaboration between European higher education institutions and to discussing and promoting open science and education practices.
The event began at 9:00 am with an introductory presentation by Luís Coelho, professor at IPS and coordinator of the E³UDRES² Ent-r-e-novators project, which aimed to highlight the objectives and main results achieved so far by the project. This was followed by a speech by Karel Luyben, president of the European Open Science Cloud Association, who discussed the importance and benefits of the European Open Science Cloud, an initiative that aims to promote open science through an integrated infrastructure of accessible scientific data. Silviu Vert, a digital technology expert from the Polytechnic University of Timisoara, presented various digital tools that facilitate the practice of open science, providing more efficient access and collaboration between researchers. Radu Vasiu and Liviu Marsavina, both professors at the Polytechnic University of Timisoara, shared their experiences and practices in open science and open access, discussing the challenges and successes of implementing these practices at their institution. Tassilo Pellegrini, a professor at St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences, spoke about open license management and how it is fundamental to the success of open science initiatives, facilitating the sharing and reuse of scientific data. The first part of this event ended with a panel discussion, moderated by Diana Andone - exploring key themes and answering questions from the participants.
In the second phase of the event, Sílvia Roda Couvaneiro, a professor at the Polytechnic University of Setúbal, addressed open pedagogies and the impact of emerging technologies on education, highlighting how these innovations can enrich the teaching-learning process. Diana Andone, a specialist in educational technologies, discussed the impact of generative artificial intelligence on open education, analyzing the opportunities and challenges that this type of technology presents for the future of education. Sarah de Coninck, a researcher at UCLL, explored the tensions between open science and citizen science, focusing on the ethical considerations that emerge from these collaborative practices. Antónia Correia, professor at the University of Minho, detailed the open science requirements stipulated by the Horizon Europe program, providing guidance on how institutions can align themselves with these demands. Joana Boavida-Portugal, a researcher at MARE, presented the data integration platform used at the ARNET Associated Laboratory, highlighting its contribution to open and collaborative science. The speakers reconvened for a panel discussion, moderated by Marta Frade, delving into the topics covered in the presentations given so far. Pedro Manuel Antão, from ISCTE, discussed the InCITIES project, an innovative pedagogical model that connects inclusive, sustainable and resilient development with research hubs. Michelle Perello, from Consulta Europa, presented the EXPER project, which uses open science practices to promote research and innovation in remote regions, highlighting its objectives and results. Irina Lungu and Marcello Costantini discussed the BI4E project, focusing on building the CONNECT platform, which aims to raise excellence in research and innovation. Jan-Hendrik Korber, from Turku University of Applied Sciences, shared the first insights of the WATERLINE project, which aims to enable pan-European education through interactive digital technologies. A final panel discussion, moderated by Maria Catarina Paz, allowed speakers and participants to debate the presentations and explore future collaborations. At around 13:30, the event was declared closed, marking the end of a productive day of discussions and learning about open science and open education.
Luís Coelho, coordinator of the Ent-r-e-novators project, highlighted the importance of the training courses on “Citizen Science” and “Open Science, Open Innovation and Open Education”, noting that SWOT analyses were carried out at each member institution to optimize the resources supporting research and develop new support strategies.

The E3UDRES2 Ent-r-e-novators project recently underwent its first evaluation by the European Commission, assessing its progress in the first 15 months. This evaluation, held on March 22nd, involved the project's key participants, including the European Commission's Project Officer and Reviewer, the Project Coordinator, work package leaders, and representatives from partner institutions.
The results, released on April 3rd, confirmed that the project is on track with its objectives as outlined in the Grant Agreement. Thirteen deliverables were submitted during this phase, all of which were accepted without requests for changes.
Professor Luís Coelho, the Project Coordinator from the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal, noted the project's adherence to planned goals and the team's collaborative effort: "This excellent result is the result of the commitment and excellent performance of the entire project team, which is to be congratulated and remains highly motivated to continue like this until the end of the project".
The project includes six original partners from the E3UDRES2 alliance: the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal, Politehnica University Timisoara, St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences, UC Leuven-Limburg UAS, and Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences.
The project aims to contribute to the European research and innovation landscape, focusing on smart and sustainable regions. It is funded under the Horizon Europe program.

E³UDRES² Ent-r-e-novators Advances Open Science and Education at International General Assembly
The Ent-r-e-novators project recently held its General Assembly, spotlighting open science and education's role in shaping the future of higher education. This pivotal event, hosted by the Politehnica University of Timisoara from March 6-8, 2024, marks a significant milestone in the collaborative journey of six pioneering institutions.
Supported by the European Commission's Horizon Europe program, the Ent-r-e-novators project is at the forefront of developing a unified strategy for research and innovation at E³UDRES². The General Assembly commenced with heartfelt welcomes and progressed into in-depth discussions about the implementation of work packages. These sessions delved into the formulation of transformation modules and pilot executions, aiming to unleash the full potential of research and innovation for the development of smart, sustainable regions.
A cornerstone of the gathering was the Open Science & Education Workshop. This forum highlighted the essential collaborative efforts required for the transition towards open science and education, spotlighting the critical roles of infrastructure, policy-making, and a nurturing culture. escolhido
Notable insights from distinguished speakers such as Karel Luijben, Vinciane Gaillard, and others illuminated the workshop. Their expertise shed light on the intricacies of open science and education, stirring discussions that laid the foundation for a more inclusive and efficient research ecosystem.
Professor Luís Coelho, project coordinator, shared his optimism about the workshop's impact, saying, "This workshop is vital for our alliance's university members, researchers, PhD students, and professors.
